The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government.

AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.


  • Scientific Programmer "Adaptation of the elliptical solver to coastal taks" (M/F/d)

Background

Tasks

  • Adaptation of the existing elliptic solver (iterative process) to solve problems on mixed unstructured grids (triangular and quads) in 2D space;
  • Adaptation of the elliptical solver to open boundary areas and wetting/dry zones;
  • Solver control optimization;
  • Based on the existing 2D solver, creating a 3D solver with an implicit vertical procedure;
  • Porting of the FESOM-C model to DKRZ HPC Levante;
  • Analysis of multidimensional model outputs on HPC with Python, Xarray and Dask.

Requirements:


  • Master degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Oceanography, Physics or related fields;
  • Strong background in highlevel programming;
  • Good communication skills in English;
  • Strong motivation;
  • Desirable: background in fluid dynamics or experience with the performance of numerical ocean simulations.

This is a full-time position, limited to 6 months. It is also suitable for part-time employment. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level
