In order to support the Flight Control Laws department, Airbus Defence and Space is looking for a


Master student in the field of Flight Control Laws (d/f/m), title of thesis Development of Generic Pitch Axis Flight Control and Control Allocation Algorithms:

The department Flight Control Laws of Airbus Defence & Space in Manching is responsible for the development of flight control algorithms for the company's aircraft projects.

The department offers an opportunity for a master thesis on design of control laws of a generic high-performance aircraft.

The goal of the overall project is to have a capable flight control model for an agile aircraft, which can be used for future research and technology developments.

While baseline control laws are already being designed, this master thesis shall focus on the pitch axis control and control allocation, transforming the moment demands to control surface deflections in an optimal way.

The description of the aircraft, i.e.

the aerodynamic and flight-dynamics model already exists in a Matlab-Simulink environment and it is based on the ADMIRE model, a publicly available research model with a flight envelope up to low supersonic Mach numbers.

Your tasks and responsibilities:


  • Familiarization with the existing aircraft model, the baseline control laws and the simulation environment.
  • Analysis of the expected handling qualities for the aircraft.
  • Design of pitch control laws, based on dynamic inversion.
  • Development of control allocation algorithm.
  • Demonstration of the flight control laws in simulation.
  • Master thesis documentation.

Desired skills and qualifications:


  • Enrolled fulltime student in the area of Aeronautical Engineering, Control System Engineering or an equivalent field of study.
  • Fluent in English, German is a plus.
  • Knowledge on flight dynamics and control law design
  • Experience with Matlab / Simulink
  • Basic knowledge in C/C++, FORTRAN or another higherorder language
  • Basic knowledge with LINUX
