We fund talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulate scientific exchanges through high-quality academic publishing, conferences and lectures, and help build a research environment where scientists can achieve their best work.

EMBO has over 2,000 members and associate members, who are eminent scientists elected by their peers.

They form the backbone of our community and serve as members of the selection committees for our programmes as well as on EMBO Council.


Our international staff of around 65 members from a variety of countries, personal circumstances and professional backgrounds work closely together for the greater good and make EMBO a truly diverse organization.

EMBO is located on the international EMBL life sciences research campus in Heidelberg, Germany.


As Head of EMBO Membership, Courses & Workshops, you will be responsible for overseeing the election of new EMBO Members and Associate Members, the annual new members' meeting, and other activities related to membership communication and outreach.

You will also oversee the selection and administration of EMBO-funded scientific meetings, including EMBO Workshops, Practical Courses, EMBO | EMBL Symposia, and other formats.


This is an outward-facing role and will suit someone who has obtained visibility and respect as a life science researcher and now seeks to transition or has already transitioned into science administration.

You will work with two executive committees comprising EMBO Members - the Membership Committee and the Course Committee, providing your scientific and management expertise to uphold the high quality that EMBO stands for.


You will join the EMBO management team, liaise closely with colleagues responsible for the other EMBO Programmes and activities, and provide leadership and mentorship to your team members.

You will report to the EMBO Director. You will line-manage four staff members.


Your role

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • For EMBO Membership and Elections:
  • Oversee the annual nomination and election procedures for EMBO Membership and Associate Membership in accordance with the EMBO Statutes & Rules;
  • Ensure the scientific integrity and efficiency of the process, liaising with nominators, curating nominations and preparing them for the election, carrying out due diligence and managing conflicts of interest;
  • Update, curate and categorize the scientific profiles of the EMBO Membership for internal and external knowledge resources;
  • Coordinate the work of the Membership Committee in liaison with the Committee Chair, prepare committee meetings and serve as a conduit between the committee and EMBO Council;
  • Liaise with EMBO Council to ensure that the composition of the Membership Committee is representative of the EMBO community;
  • Provide statistics and strategic insight regarding representation, diversity, and development of the EMBO Membership;
  • Oversee engagement with the EMBO Members and Associate Members through the annual EMBO Members' Meeting, the EMBO Directory, outreach activities and other initiatives, in close liaison with the EMBO Director, the EMBO Communications team, and the programme teams as applicable.
  • For EMBO Courses & Workshops:
  • Evaluate, process, and screen meeting proposals from scientific organizers with the support of the Courses & Workshops team;
  • Suggest improvements to the Courses & Workshops Programme, event formats, and processes for consideration by the EMBO Director and Council;
  • Coordinate the work of the Course Committee in liaison with the Committee Chair, prepare and follow up on committee meetings;
  • Liaise with EMBO Council to ensure that the composition of the Course Committee is representative of the EMBO community;

  • Develop and monitor the programme budget;
  • Represent and promote EMBO and the Courses & Workshops Programme externally to raise awareness and foster collaborative relationships with the scientific community, partner organizations, and other stakeholders.
Flexible working arrangements, including the option to work from home two days a week, are available in this role. The position requires occasional travel and work outside normal working hours, including weekends.


You have

  • A PhD in life sciences or in a related field;
  • A strong scientific background including international and crossdisciplinary research experience;
