The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.


This position is located in the communications section of the secretariat of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

The section is responsible for devising, implementing and managing the communications strategy of IPBES, in line with mandates approved by the IPBES Plenary.

Under the supervision of IPBES Head of Communication, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:


Responsibilities:


  • Tracks, researches and analyzes information on assigned topics/issues; gathers information from diverse sources and helps to assess news value and other potential impact, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of information campaigns.
  • Drafts and distributes creative content for social media across all IPBES social media accounts by researching, designing and scheduling posts to maximize reach and impact in accordance with the IPBES social media strategy.
  • Monitors and supports improvement of IPBES social media performance by tracking, recording and analyzing a range of social media audience growth and engagement metrics, providing regular reports to management and offering recommendations for improvement across all IPBES social media platforms.
  • Organizes the clearance, production and distribution of information material; conducts photo and graphic research; maintains, updates and manages the social mediarelated digital information assets of IPBES.
  • In consultation with others identifies and proposes information opportunities, activities and approaches, taking into account the situation/topic and target audience.
  • Identifies key contacts/constituencies/stakeholders and opportunities for strategic partnerships, especially via social media, to facilitate communication efforts and maintains working relationships with the same.
  • Organizes or participates in the organization of social media strategies and assets for conferences, seminar, press briefings, interviews; prepares social media materials for senior officials prior to their participation in such events.
  • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for datadriven planning, decisionmaking, presentation and reporting.
  • Responds to a variety of inquiries and information requests internally and externally; prepares related correspondence.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field is required.


A first level-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of two (2) years of social media strategic and operational management in a professional setting is required.

Experience of social media management in a professional biodiversity or environmental context is desirable.

Experience of social media management in an intergovernmental or international organizational context is desirable.

Experience monitoring and reporting on social media trends and performance is desirable.


One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable (none if successful YPP or P-1 with a related degree).

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nation's language is desirable.
