and evidence-based consultation gives our employees unique access to national and international stakeholders in politics and business.

The position is in the Competence Center "Sustainability and Infrastructure Systems" and available at the earliest opportunity.

The Competence Center "Sustainability and Infrastructure Systems" takes a systemic approach to analyzing the conditions for transforming entire systems in the direction of environmental and societal compatibility.

In addition to environmental aspects, this takes economic, political and social aspects into account.

What you will do

  • As part of our research team, you will be dealing with innovation processes for the sustainability transformation of the circular economy, digitalization and artificial intelligence. Your work will also immerse you in associated areas in water management, mobility and raw materials supply.
  • You will look at environmental innovations at a micro level and prepare technoeconomic costbenefit analyses, lifecycle costing analyses and, in some cases, simple environmental assessments.
  • In addition, you will examine the course and determinants of the diffusion of environmental innovations and develop (quantitative) scenarios for this. Among other things, you will look at ways to shape this through policy instruments in the context of the innovation system.
  • You will analyze the effects of environmental innovations on environmental and climate protection (greenhouse gas emissions, use of resources, etc.) as well as on economic parameters (e.g. gross added value, labor requirements, international competitiveness). Modelbased methods are also used for this.
  • Your work will be based on quantitative and qualitative data sources such as patent and foreign trade databases, expert interviews, surveys and stakeholder workshops.

What you bring to the table

  • You have successfully obtained a university degree and a doctorate. You are qualified in the field of economics and have additional qualifications or previous experience in the field of engineering and natural sciences (e.g. industrial engineering).
  • Knowledge of technoeconomic assessment, diffusion analysis, innovation system analysis, environmental assessment, or economic modeling is a definite plus.
  • You are genuinely interested in analyzing the conditions, opportunities, and limitations of environmental innovation and shaping sustainability transformation.
  • Independence, the ability to work in a team and an interest in interdisciplinary, scientific work and publishing are required.
  • You are able to present work results confidently in oral and written form. Very good written and spoken German and English are also necessary.

What you can expect

  • Interdisciplinary nature: Employees from a wide range of disciplines work together in our project teams. This allows us to bring in different approaches, methods and ways of thinking that enable truly interdisciplinary project work.
  • Working as a team: You work independently and take on responsibility in highly motivated teams. Our employees benefit from our flat hierarchy, which promotes an autonomous approach to work.
  • Infrastructure: Our workplaces are equipped with the latest technology.
  • Personal development: We help you to advance both your career and your personal development through extensive and targeted training and career programs.
  • Compatibility of work and family life: A good worklife balance is important to our employees. Fraunhofer ISI offers flexible working hours and the opportunity for telework. To further support you, we have cooperation agreements with childcare facilities close to the institute as well as emergency childcare and homecare/eldercare offers.
  • Health and fitness: We look after our employees and offer a range of sport and healthrelated options.
  • Equal opportunities and diversity: Different experiences and backgrounds are the driving force behind creative ideas and concepts and thus for innovations. We consider diversity to be an enrichment for the work at Fraunhofer. We try to make our teams as balanced as possible made up of different genders, age groups, cultures and disciplines.
