Structural Reliability - Failure Probability Calculations for Components Being Sized by Fatigue as an Input to System Safety Analyses

Background:
In addition to the limit-state-function, the modeling of the basic variables such as e.g.

strength, pressure or geometric data as well as the distribution functions are an input to the calculation and have a significant impact on the failure probability.

Within the Airbus Safety/Reliability Department in Hamburg, the System Safety Analyses for the Passenger Door Kinematics use the Structural Reliability Approach to show compliance with CS As the passenger door kinematics is mainly sized by static stress, the Structural Reliability Approach used is time-independent.

If the Structural Reliability Methodology is applied to other mechanical systems, a time

Your location:

You will be working at the largest production site for civil aircraft situated in Hamburg. Its location on the southern banks of the river Elbe includes the option to commute by ferry. Experience the special flair of Hamburg in your spare time where vibrant cosmopolitan culture meets nautic legacy.

Your benefits:

  • Attractive salary and worklife balance with a 35hour week (flexitime).
  • Mobile working after agreement with the department.
  • International environment with the opportunity to network globally.
  • Work with modern/diversified technologies.
  • At Airbus, we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee, instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings.
  • Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

The master thesis shall give an overview of the different structural reliability methods available for time-dependent probability calculations and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.

For the methodology considered most appropriate, two examples shall be calculated. Regarding the examples, fatigue calculations will be provided as an input.

Additionally, a parameter study shall be carried out for the examples to analyze the impact of the modeling of the basic variables as well as of the distribution functions chosen.

The results shall be discussed.

  • Familiarization with System Safety Process and CS general overview only)
  • Literature Study: Structural reliability methods for timedependent problems
  • What is the current state of the art?
  • What are the tools needed and available?
  • Application on two examples (fatigue calculations to be provided by Airbus)
  • Parameter study
  • Discussion of the results

Desired skills and qualifications:

  • Enrolled fulltime student (d/f/m) in the area of Mechanical Engineering with focus on stress and fatigue or an equivalent field of study.
  • First practical experience in the field of static stress and/or fatigue and damage tolerance is desirable.
  • Fluent in German and English.
  • Structural Reliability basic knowledge is preferred
  • Ability to work autonomously
