Master student (f/m/d) - High Performance Computing and Data Science in Diet-Microbiota Interactions:
The position can start as soon as possible. This is a master thesis position with a duration of six months. We can offer various entry opportunities. More detailed information on the schedule will be happy to be consulted.


We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Master student to join our DFG funded research team in exploring the intricate interplay between the gut and the liver, with a specific focus on the role of the gut microbiota and its relationship with diet and liver health.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in the field of biostatistics and data science while gaining valuable experience in high-performance computing environments and contributing to improved patient outcomes.


Tasks

  • Analyze the impact of nutritional patterns on the development of liver disease in ap opulationbased cohort using data from the Lifelines Biobank.
  • Utilize metabolomics and gut microbiota data, as well as questionnaires on nutritional patterns, to identify associations.
  • Employ statistical modeling techniques, including machine learning algorithms, to extract meaningful insights from complex datasets.
  • Perform data analysis and visualization to communicate findings effectively.

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Data Science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Passion for scientific research and a keen interest in gut microbiota, nutrition, and liver health.
  • Experience with High Performance Computing Environments, particularly Linux, is an essential prerequisite for this thesis.
  • Proficiency in parallel computing, including the ability to submit jobs with Slurm, is highly desired.
  • Comfortable with scripting languages such as bash for automation and task management.
  • Extensive programming experience in Python and R, with a strong understanding of statistical modeling and data analysis.
  • Ability to manipulate high volume and large datasets effectively.
  • Experience in process automation to streamline data workflows.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new biostatistics tools and techniques.
  • Interest in solving medical problems

structured training by the project supervisor (Carolin Schneider, MD) within an
established team with several
post-docs and doctoral students. The project supervisor works scientifically at the Medical Clinic III in Aachen as well as at the University of Pennsylvania.
