Specific Duties

PhD project M2.

2 at Universität Hamburg:

There is a big variety of ideas and realisations on how to use renewable energies to produce directly heat energy or electrical energy, ideally in a highly efficient way.

For both energy types there is a high demand. The most practiced and know realisations are solar energy based, e.g. parabolic trough power plants. Other much less studied and realized variants are osmosis based, e.g. pressure retarded osmosis.

The aim of this topic requires a detailed modeling of a complete power station with its various components. We plan to focus on solar and non-solar based realisations.

Mathematically in almost all the cases we have to model, analyze and optimize transient, coupled thermo-fluid dynamic processes for complex fluids.

Major tasks:
- to model the fluid dynamics (liquid, air, water vapor etc., phase transitions)
- to simulate the dynamics
- to optimize certain quantities such as net power output

Requirements:

Solid mathematical background in differential equations and their numerics.
To be open minded towards complex physical systems.

PhD project O1.

  • Convex Integration
PhD project O2.

2 at Technische Universität Hamburg (TU Hamburg):
- efficient model-order reducing approaches to unsteady optimization
- optimization of unsteady propeller-hull-interaction
- robust & risk aware transient optimization. Examples included should address shape optimization of energy saving devices for modern propulsion systems.

(1) Application of quantum-inspired tensor network methods to formulate reduced-order models for wall-bounded flows. (2) Formulation of classical Finite Volume building blocks using Matrix Product State and Matrix Product Operator formats. (3) Transfer of Tensor Network simulations to Quantum gate level simulations using variational quantum methods. Examples included should address laminar/turbulent attached and separated wall-bounded engineering shear flows.

PhD project S2.

2 at Technische Universität Hamburg (TU Hamburg):

Applicants should perform research in the development of iterative solvers for linear systems of equations arising in fluid flow problems.

Recently, a new meshfree discretization technique for partial differential equations based on radial basis functions has been introduced.

The objective of this project is the development and analysis of rank-structured preconditioners for sequences of linear systems resulting from such meshfree discretizations of fluid flow problems.
