Job description:

The world is not on track to meet the Sustainable Development Goal targets and without drastic action, hundreds of millions of people may suffer the consequences.

In response, governments, corporations and individuals are increasingly taking advantage of emissions reduction instruments, namely carbon offsets and renewable energy certificates (RECs) to rebalance global emissions and bring clean energy to the world's most vulnerable people.

Energising Development (EnDev) is one of the world's leading energy access programs:

pioneering innovative approaches, developing new markets for pro-poor access and scaling up successful interventions in more than 20 countries worldwide.

EnDev is now seeking new opportunities at the nexus of energy access and climate finance, especially carbon offsets and RECs.

Your tasks:

  • Exploring and developing opportunities for EnDev to engage with carbon markets (especially voluntary carbon markets) and REC (e.g. Distributed-REC) markets
  • Leading regular and ad hoc exchanges with EnDev implementers to understand dynamics between local energy access markets and carbon/REC markets
  • Providing expert backstopping support in the design and rollout of pilot carbon offset/REC initiatives by EnDev partners and implementers
  • Collecting lessonslearned from pilot activities, generate evidence and distill best practices for wider dissemination, both for internal and external audience
  • Shaping EnDev's overarching position/strategy towards emission reduction instruments, in close consultation with other inhouse technical experts
  • Representing EnDev in working groups and at conferences where the topic of carbon/REC markets are of high relevance, including the exploration of new partnerships
  • Providing thematic quality control of EnDev proposals, reports, articles and other knowledge product
  • Assisting EnDev country teams in advising governments (and other development institutions, as needed) on marketbased regulatory approaches around carbon/REC markets

Your profile:

  • University degree in sustainable finance, environmental economics, energy policy or another field relevant to the position
  • Relevant professional experience in implementing or supporting carbon offset projects in developing countries; experience in one or more EnDev countries is an advantage
  • Experience working with private companies in the energy access sector; expertise in the clean cooking sector is a distinct advantage
  • Demonstrated understanding of key processes and actors in carbon/REC markets
  • Experience advising governments on regulatory strategies to promote private sector market development
  • Structured work style with a high degree of selforganisation, flexibility and creativity, including ability to draw up work plans and deliver on nearterm milestones and longterm goals
  • Strong communication, presentation, facilitation and marketing skills
  • Business fluency in English; fluency in French is a distinct advantage

Notes:

This job is suited to a full or a part-time position.

The willingness for frequent business trips is required.

In order to fulfill the company's objectives, the readiness of employees for assignments at all GIZ locations in Germany and abroad is of high corporate interest.
