Beschreibung
The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar research institute in Europe.

Our approximately 1,400 employees work towards a sustainable, economic, secure and socially just energy supply system based on renewable energies.

We contribute to this with our main research areas of energy supply, energy distribution, energy storage and energy use.

Through outstanding research results, successful industrial projects, company spin-offs and global collaborations, we are shaping the sustainable transformation of the energy system.

For our "Energy Meteorology" group, we are looking for you to join us as soon as possible as a Computer Scientist - PV Power Prediction with Machine Learning.

"Machine learning methods" are your topic? And you want to use your knowledge to actively shape the energy transition? Then let's contribute together by developing AI-based models for solar power forecasting In the "Energy Meteorology" group, we develop such models that are needed to effectively integrate fluctuating solar power into the energy system.

For this purpose, we use cloud camera images, data from weather satellites and weather models, and measured data. We combine meteorological knowledge about clouds with know-how about solar systems and machine learning methods.

What you will do

  • The goal of your work is to work independently on projects for "forecasting solar power" using machine learning methods.
  • You are responsible for the conception, development and implementation of forecast models based on weather satellite data, cloud camera images, weather model data and measurement data.
  • For this purpose, you will use stateoftheart AI models, in particular computer vision models for cloud image prediction as well as probabilistic models.
  • With your expertise in machine learning you support the model development and the implementation of productive systems in various research projects in close collaboration with your team.
  • You publish your scientific results and present them to expert audiences in workshops, project meetings, and at national and international conferences.
  • You will be involved in the acquisition of new projects in solar power prediction, both in the scientific and industrial environment.

What you bring to the table

  • You have a university degree (Master) in computer science or a comparable field and ideally some work experience or a PhD.
  • You have sound knowledge of machine learning methods with a focus on deep learning and generative neural networks.
  • You have routine experience in scientific programming with Python and with machine learning libraries such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • You have practice in software development tools and revision control with Git, package management with conda/pip, deployment on compute clusters, and testdriven development.
  • At best, you have knowhow in one or more of the following areas: in probabilistic programming with PyMC3, Pyro or TensorFlow Probability as well as in image recognition with OpenCV, in GPU implementation using CUDA and on databases and formats such as NetCDF, HDF5, SQL, InfluxDB and Spark.
  • You are aware of the challenges of realworld datasets and quality control of input data is as important to you as modeling.
  • You have a knack for coming up with innovative ideas and for problem solving.
  • You are passionate about contributing to your team and achieving common goals through interdisciplinary collaboration.

What you can expect

  • You will work with one of the most popular employers on a par with the best.
  • Openminded colleagues are happy to welcome new talents into their ranks.
  • We offer flexible working hours and give you the opportunity to work from home.
  • We also foster a cooperative working atmosphere and open communication.
  • We value equal opportunities and provide room for diversity.
  • You can participate in attractive sports and health programs and afterwork activities.
  • If required, we provide flexible daycare and kindergarten services at special rates for your children.
  • Life situation coaching, homecare eldercare, further training and much more round off our offer.
The weekly working time is 39 hours. The position can also be filled on a part-time basis. The position is initially limited to 2 years.
