The UFZ

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences.

We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association.

Our mission:
Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.

The job

The aim of the study is to investigate the establishment of the gut-brain axis throughout the first days of a bee's life.

Subsequently, we would like to see the differences in the proteomic and metabolomic profiles of the gut-brain axis in fully established nurse bees and foragers.

This will give us an insight about the natural changes in the gut-brain axis which occur with age, and thus behavioural tasks, in field conditions.

There already is some existing information about the neuronal connections in newly emerged workers and the establishment of the gut microbiota through social interaction and contact with hive surfaces, but the connection between gut and brain has not yet been investigated.

Your tasks

  • Rearing agecontrolled bees in the laboratory
  • Collecting worker bee samples from hives over a timeframe of about 30 days
  • Dissecting bees to extract brain and guts for analyses
  • Sample preparation for proteomics and metabolomics
  • Analyses of proteomic and metabolomic data to investigate potential changes in gut, brain, and their crosscommunication
We offer

  • Great insights into work of a leading research institute
  • Individual supervision with the possibility to work independently
  • A topic with high chances of future scientific outcomes
  • Work in international teams in a wellequipped institute

Profile:

  • Studying a related MSc degree in one of the following disciplines
    :Biology, Entomology, or Biochemistry:
  • Very good written and oral English; German is not essential
  • Demonstrable experience showing attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Desired but not necessary: experience with dissection, laboratory and/or field work experience, achieved or on track for a minimum grade of 2,0 or equivalent
