Babbel's team consists of 750 Babbelonians representing over 65 different nationalities working in Berlin and New York.

We are looking for a "Head of" for our Infrastructure Team in the heart of buzzing Berlin

The Infrastructure team is responsible for running all of our production load in AWS. The team is providing the services to all of our other teams to run their services and components.

A huge amount of their day to day work is supporting the other engineering teams on how to best set up, run and maintain their services.

As everything is being managed via Infrastructure as Code (terraform) all teams can propose their setup to be reviewed by the Infrastructure team.

Next to running our production load in AWS, Infrastructure is also managing engineering crucial tools and services such as Github, Pagerduty or Rollbar.

In your role as "Head of" you will work closely with the team to prepare and deliver a wide range of technical initiatives as well as manage daily business topics and be the lead for the team.

Your role will be a hybrid between managing and leading the team members but also managing the stakeholders and the team's backlog.

You will support the team driving their initiatives and organizing them across the product and engineering teams (as most changes require some action by every team).

You are an evangelist and passionate about the benefits of Infrastructure's tools and services.

You can communicate those benefits to others, helping others to succeed and are committed to spreading awareness of our tools and services.

You will

Be the engineering people manager for the engineers in the Infrastructure team (currently 4)
Be the delivery manager to deliver the initiatives or necessary changes to keep our platform and services stable
Be leading Infrastructure driven topics such as bigger strategic changes but also maintenance tasks that span across the product organization), acting as a project manager / evangelist to ensure a successful and timely delivery
Be the stakeholder manager who collaborates with the other engineering teams
Make sure team members are engaged and complement each other in achieving common goals autonomously
Establish a roadmap and strategy together with the team, ideally mid

- and long term

Create documentations, guardrails or policies to best enable teams for selfservice
Take over and manage the cost center and contracts for the tools and services used by Infrastructure (AWS, Pagerduty, GitHub, etc)
Ensure that health metrics are established, monitored and observed. Not only in your team but also in others
Contributing to our Tech Strategy and Engineering Chapter, evangelize Infrastructure related initiatives
Collaborate closely with other engineering managers, product managers, engineers, or Infosec to influence product and tech strategy and drive the tech development roadmap
Attract, onboard, develop, and retain diverse talents to your team

You have

Experience leading and developing backend teams within an international, agile environment
Practical experience with GitHub, Terraform
Passion about learning outcomes and people, not just technical excellence
Proven experience in direct people management
Customercentric prioritization for internal and external stakeholders as well as datainformed decision making
Experience in collaboration with different corporate functions
Comfortable giving and receiving actionable, constructive feedback
Experience in creating and managing career development plans for engineers with diverse skill sets
Deep exposure to scrum agile and other delivery methodologies (such as OKRs)
Evangelist mindset to explain required changes to product and engineering teams

Nice to have
