A major key to success in facing climate change and creating more resilient supply chains is the transformation of feedstocks from fossil resources to renewable raw materials.

Led by the Hamburg University of Technology, the CRC 1615 is developing processes and reactors that respond flexibly to the fluctuating properties of renewable raw materials, thus enabling self-adapting, more resilient process engineering

Project C01:

Integration of components into adaptive geometries
Within this project, self-adaptive structures that control reactions based on the reactor conditions are investigated.
In the beginning, suitable unit cells and materials for selected reactions are investigated, so that structures for high heat
- and mass transport can be designed. With this, self-adapting, additive manufactured (AM) structures with temperature-controlled actuators, as well as self-adapting AM structures with pH-controlled actuators will be investigated.

Furthermore, the integration of components for in situ detection & self-adjustment into AM structures is part of the research activities.

The final step is the validation by means of experiments and CFD.

YOUR TASKS

  • Design and Additive Manufacturing of responsive structures made from hydrogels
  • Collaboration with the investigators from the project A01 of the CRC to work on the manufacturability of the hydrogels through stereolithography and fused deposition modelling, including the modification of such a printer
  • Material characterisations, such as rheological tests to understand fundamental manufacturing potentials and limitations
  • Collaboration with the investigators from the project B01 of the CRC regarding swelling and shrinking characteristics, which is needed for the tailored design of the structures regarding their selfadaptation capabilities
  • Investigate designmaterialcombinations that react to different stimuli

YOUR PROFILE

  • Prior experience in Additive Manufacturing and/or hydrogels is advantageous
  • Thorough understanding of polymer science
  • Good English language skills are required for project management and publication activities
  • Strong communication skills for the interaction within an interdisciplinary team

OUR OFFER

  • We offer you the opportunity for scientific qualification with the goal of a doctoral degree (PhD)
  • You will become part of a committed team
  • Highly innovative, dynamic technical environment with access to stateofthe Art AM technology
  • Opportunity to actively contribute to a topic of high relevance for society and environment and make a difference
  • Flexible and familyfriendly working conditions, 30 days of vacation per year
  • Special conditions in selected sports and fitness clubs
