In order to support the Future Programmes department, Airbus Defence and Space is looking for a

Master student in the field of Space Situational Awareness and Space Debris (d/f/m), Space Surveillance and Tracking - Space Object Characterization:

  • Location: Friedrichshafen/Immenstaad
  • Start: October
  • Duration: 6 months

Since the early days of spaceflight, space in Earth's vicinity has become increasingly crowded with active satellites and passive space debris.

In order to maintain safe operations in space, we need a good understanding of the space environment and the objects therein.

This is the aim of the field of Space Situational Awareness (SSA). Within this field, Airbus Defence and Space is developing innovative technologies for Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST).

Real-world data for this endeavour is collected by the Airbus Robotic Telescope (ART), which performs surveillance and tracking observations of satellites and debris.

The data is processed by the Airbus software framework SPOOK. Your job will be to use and improve these tools to collaborate in this research effort. In particular, you will focus on the development and implementation of methods for space object characterization.

Your location:

At the Airbus site in Friedrichshafen you will be working on innovation where others spend their holidays. Enjoy panoramic views of Lake Constance while having lunch in our canteen. And after work, join one of our many corporate sports groups to go running, sailing or skiing.

Your benefits:

  • Attractive salary and worklife balance with an 35hour week (flexitime).
  • International environment with the opportunity to network globally.
  • Work with modern/diversified technologies.
  • At Airbus, we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee, instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings.
  • Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.

Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Familiarization with the topic of SSA, the Airbus Robotic Telescope (ART) and the existing code (SPOOK).
  • Literature review on space object characterization.
  • Implementation, testing and validation of new functions for SPOOK.
  • Regular progress meetings.
  • Preparation of a Master Thesis and thorough documentation of the work performed.

Desired skills and qualifications:

  • Enrolled full time Master student (d/f/m) in space or aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, automation engineering, physics, mathematics, software engineering or related fields.
  • Experience in programming (Python and/or Fortran experience is a plus).
  • Knowledge of orbital mechanics, optics, image processing and/or estimation theory is a plus.
  • Interest in Space Situational Awareness topics and space debris mitigation.
  • Positive attitude towards teamwork.
  • Good communicative skills.
  • Fluent English.

Please upload the following documents:
cover letter, CV, relevant transcripts, enrollment certificate.
