Master-/Bachelor-Thesis in Neural Networks for Aerodynamic Modelling (d/f/m):
Are you looking for a final year project?

Would you like to discover the work of an Aerodynamic Dataset team with focus on Military Combat Aircraft?

We look forward to you joining us at Airbus Defence and Space in Manching, Flight Physics, Aerodynamic Department.


Team Profile:

You will be part of the "Aerodynamic Dataset and SR&J Team", within the Aerodynamic department in Flight Physics.


The team has the responsibility to generate and update aerodynamic models/representations of all Airbus Combat Aircraft in development and in operation based on both experimental and numerical data.

Purpose of our work is to build the basis (i.e. the Aerodynamic dataset model) for proper Flight clearances, Flight Control Law designs, Performance estimates, Loads estimations and Aerodynamic Design upgrades, amongst others.

Located about an hour's drive north of Munich, Manching is an up-and-coming market town that offers a wide range of leisure and cultural activities.

Your tasks and responsibilities:


  • We are currently investigating new approaches for generating Aerodynamic dataset models.
  • Your Thesis will support an already ongoing investigation into the use of Machine Learning approaches for aerodynamic modelling.
  • Depending on your interest your work may focus on either of two categories: geometry/data classification, reduced order modelling (e.g. neural networks) based on flight test data;
  • You will understand the aerodynamic characteristics that are key for a Combat Aircraft.
  • You will contribute to the introduction of new and more efficient digital ways of working.

Desired skills and qualifications:


  • Enrolled full time student (d/f/m) in Aerospace Engineering with affinity for programming or Student in Information Technology with affinity for Aerospace.
  • Autonomous work style.
  • Curious to try new things.
  • Willingness to learn fast.
  • Programming Skills: Python (ideally experience with TensorFlow), experience MATLAB is optional
  • Language: Fluent in either German or English.
This position will require a security clearance or will require being eligible for clearance by the recognized authorities.
