Junior Professorship for English Linguistics (M/F/d)

(W1 per LBesG with tenure track to W2, conferring with civil-service status)
at the
Department for English and American Studies, which is to be filled at the very latest
by 31 May 2023 as part of the federal-state program for the development of junior researchers

In the research profile "Culture and its Mediation", Faculty 2 focuses on communication
processes, their forms, potentials and limits in politics, society, and culture. The faculty
cooperates with the other profile areas of the University of Koblenz and with regional and
municipal institutions.

The Department of English and American Studies consists of two independent sections:

  • Anglistik und Amerikanistik _and _Fremdsprachliche Bildung in der Grundschule (FBG) _. The section
of _English and American Studies _focuses on the complex transformations of Anglophone
cultures in a global world. Privileged areas of research are literature and (visual) culture from
the 18th to the 21st century, Material Studies, Cultural Studies, Postcolonial Studies, Applied
Linguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Language Practice, and Foreign Language Teaching,
especially Content Language Integrated Learning and Task-Based Language Teaching.

  • Fremdsprachliche Bildung in der Grundschule (FBG)
  • Englisch _focusses on the research,
primary school.

The professorship advertised here is intended to raise the profile of the department in
Linguistics particularly with a focus on the interdisciplinary research projects of Faculty 2 and in
compliance with the curricular standards for teacher training in Rhineland-Palatinate. Therefore,
courses focusing on teaching linguistics/language in the teacher training programs.


Key responsibilities:

Research is expected to focus on sociolinguistics (e.g., varieties, intercultural communication)
or linguistics and media connecting to topics relevant in school. Expertise in the respective other
field will be a plus.

In addition, active engagement in the acquisition of third-party funding will be expected.

The position holder's responsibilities will include actively recruiting and developing junior
researchers.

The teaching obligation is four hours per week per semester (SWS) until the interval evaluation,
after which it increases to six hours per week per semester. For W2 professorships the teaching
obligation is currently nine hours per week per semester.***programs and the teacher training degree programs.

Administering examinations in all degree programs the department is involved in is also
required.

The willingness to cooperate across and within disciplines and in general is a prerequisite.

In addition, participation in academic self-government activities are optional. Only after the
interval evaluation they are compulsory.

Recruitment requirements:

The recruitment requirements of Section 54 of the Higher Education Act (HochSchG) of the
State of Rhineland-Palatinate apply. They include, inter alia, a successful completion of a
higher-education degree in the field of English and/or American Studies, pedagogical aptitude,
which must be demonstrated separately, as well as special competence in academic work,
which is usually demonstrated by a qualified doctorate in English Linguistics.

In addition, applicants are expected to have changed to another university after completing
their doctorate or to have worked outside the University of Koblenz-Landau for at least two
years.

This tenure track professorship is supported by WISNA. The program aims to develop early
- career researchers. Eligibility under WISNA is a precondition for appointment to the
professorship.

Positions in the teacher training degree programs whose job description includes tasks in
possible with applicants who can demonstrate a minimum of three years teaching experience
at school.
Experience in acquiring third-party funding and managing projects with third-party funding will
be a plus. A research concept must be presented.

Both German and English language skills are required at native speaker level; courses are
offered exclusively in English.***Special teaching skills and experience are required and must be demonstrated by presenting
a teaching concept.
