The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.


The Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) is a regional treaty aiming at achieving favourable conservation status of the populations of migratory waterbirds.

Amongst AEWA's strategic objectives is ensuring that any use of migratory waterbirds is sustainable.


The AEWA Secretariat is administered by UNEP and is responsible for advancing the agenda of the Agreement and supporting the implementation of its provision in close cooperation with governments, UN entities and other organizations.

This post is located in the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat (Science, Implementation and Compliance Unit) at the Bonn duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Head of Science, Implementation and Compliance Unit and the overall supervision of the AEWA Executive Secretary, the incumbent will perform the following duties;


Responsibilities:

Assist the operations of the European Goose Management Platform by:
a) Support the preparation, organisation and runing of its meetings and workshops, including drafting the agenda and meeting documents.
b) Facilitate provision of advice and support to the participating parties in the Platform.
c) Facilitate provision of resources and support to the International Data Centre associated with the Plartform.
d) Monitor and engage with partners to allow all activities in the annual management cycle to be undertaken by the respective organisations in due time and results to be delivered according to deadlines.
e) Assist in securing the annual budget for the international coordination of the Platform.
f) Facilitate the maintenance and strengthening of the network of organisations and stakeholders contributing to the work of the Platform.
g) Assist in drafting species management plans or other policy and technical documents.

Assist in promoting other initiatives related to sustainable use of waterbirds by:
a) Support the identification, formulation, planning and implementation, including outsourcing, project and activities contributing to sustainable consumptive or non-consumptive use of waterbirds.
b) Facilitate the establishment, maintenance and strengthening of a network of organisations and stakeholders to contribute to the work on sustainable use of waterbirds promoted under AEWA.
c) Assist in raising financial and other resources.
d) Assist in producing papers and guidance on sustainable use of waterbirds.

Assist the Science, Implementation and Compliance Unit and the rest of the UNEP/AEWA Secretariat by:

a) Contribute to the preparation, organisation and running of the meetings of the AEWA governing bodies (Technical Committee, Standing Committee, Meeting of the Parties).

b) Contribute to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in natural sciences (e.g. biology, ecology), natural resource management, environmental economics, environmental law, environmental policy or other related area is required.


A first level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience
A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in project, programme management or related area is required.

At least one (1) year experience at the international level is desirable.
