Your team

  • You will be part of the Legislation Division in the Directorate General Legal Services. Our Division is responsible for preparing ECB legal acts in the official languages of the EU, reviewing legal texts for legal, linguistic and terminological consistency and maintaining a legal terminology database. The Division is also in charge of publishing and disseminating the ECB's legal framework and other legal publications.
  • In the field of banking supervision, our Division provides advice and expertise on developing ECB supervisory decisions within the Single Supervisory Mechanism and is involved in preparing and reviewing these decisions. We also contribute to large banking supervision projects and help implement common policies in this area.
  • In your role as trainee lawyerlinguist, you will be part of a multinational team of 40 members of staff responsible for ensuring that ECB legal acts are sound in all 24 official EU languages and work closely with other relevant business areas from across the institution.

Your role

  • As a trainee lawyerlinguist you will:
  • translate draft ECB legal acts and other legal documents from English into Estonian;
- revise Estonian translations of ECB legal acts and other legal documents;
- translate legal texts from Estonian into English for internal working purposes and revise Estonian-to
  • English translations of national laws and other legal documents;
- contribute to the drafting of ECB legal acts;
- carry out legal research on legislative drafting and areas relevant to the ECB's activities as a central bank and banking supervisor;
- engage in the Division's projects on, for example, the development of the ECB lawyer-linguist function, knowledge management and the use of technology;
- contribute, as required, to the overall work of the Division.

Qualifications, experience and skills

  • Essential:
- a bachelor's degree (or higher) in Estonian law, awarded by an Estonian university;
- an excellent (C2) command of Estonian and an advanced (C1) command of English, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
- a good knowledge of the MS Office package.


Desired:
- a good knowledge of EU law;
- a basic understanding of EU and Estonian banking and financial law;
- a qualification in modern languages and/or translation;
- experience translating legal texts, ideally using CAT tools;
- an intermediate-level (B1) command of at least one other official EU language, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
