The Pelagic Microbiology Group at the ICBM (Institute of Biology and Chemistry of the Marine Environment) of the University Oldenburg, Germany, offers a position as a


Research Assistant (f/m/d)
(salary according to E13 TV-L, 100%)


as soon as possible and limited until three years from starting date. The position offers the possibility of habilitation. The position is also suitable for part-time work.


One of the main goals of the research assistant is to understand and characterize microbial associations and interactions in aquatic environments.

To do this, we will use a combination of cultivation and state of the art technologies.

The project has ample opportunities to establish collaborations and develop and test research hypothesis about microbial interactions, microbial metabolites as marketplace and vitamin exchanges.

We are seeking for an innovative, energetic, and collaborative individual. In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills.


Following qualifications are required:

  • Qualifying academic university degree (Master or diploma (not of a University of Applied Sciences) in microbiology or a related discipline.
  • PhD in marine microbial ecology or a related discipline.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data from large scale sequencing projects (i.e. metagenomics or metatranscriptomics).
  • Prior experience in vitamin analysis in the context of microbial interactions.
  • Expertise in vitamin B7 and B12 in the aquatic environments.
  • Experience working in an international environment.
  • Proven ability to work both as part of a team as well as independently.
  • Ability to both provide and act on constructive criticism.
In teaching, we expect participation in courses in the field of marine microbial ecology.
