The Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin is a joint medical faculty, which serves both Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.

As one of the largest university hospitals in Europe with an important history, it plays a leading role in research, teaching and clinical care.

The Charité university hospital has also made a name for itself as a modern business with certifications in the medical, clinical and management fields.

The Institute of Virology at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin (Director: Prof. Drosten) has around 90 employees, 10 independent working groups and two consulting laboratories (coronaviruses and hantaviruses). Dr. Jones Kelly's group focuses on computational approaches to diagnostics and improved understanding of viral evolution. We are looking for a data technician to join our team to help support all aspects of our work. We offer an exciting, meaningful position in an open-minded and international team. This advertisement is in the context of the project DURABLE (EU HERA).

Die Stelle im Überblick

Running data analysis pipeline on the high-performance cluster
Gradual improvement and overhaul of sequence data analysis pipeline
Investigation and evaluation of new bioinformatics tools for possible usage by the group
Improvement of Django web server back and front end
Creation and modification of a wide variety of shell and Python scripts
Possible occasional programmatic support of other virology institute research groups
Maintenance of (currently two) virtual Linux servers
Scientific staff is given sufficient time to carry out their own scientific work in accordance with their employment relationship

Danach suchen wir

University degree in one of:
computer science, bioinformatics, microbiology
Very good English skills (the working language of the group is English)
Strong Python programming experience with an enthusiasm for programming
Good knowledge of common Python packages used in bioinformatics and visualization
Belief in the value of unit testing and a healthy attitude towards the value and importance of testing in general
Strong UNIX command line knowledge
Knowledge of HPCS, including SLURM
Knowledge of processing DNA sequencing data
A statistical background, preferably with an understanding of Bayesian inference, would be an advantage
Knowledge of virology, immunology, cell biology would be an advantage
Very good organizational and communication skills, commitment, team spirit
High degree of independence, initiative, responsibility
