The Hertie School is looking for a


Doctoral Researcher/Research Associate - Multi-level Climate Governance in Germany (gn)
on a 65% basis (26 hours/week) via the Ariadne project.


Your tasks:


We are seeking a Doctoral Researcher/Research Associate to join our team at the CfS to conduct research on multi-level climate governance in Germany.

Collaborating with leading political scientists, legal scholars, and economists in Germany, you will have the opportunity to advance cutting-edge, policy-relevant social science on multi-level climate change mitigation governance as part of the Ariadne II project (funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research).

As part of the project team, you will contribute to work on developing a conceptual framework for analyzing, diagnosing, and reforming climate governance in Germany across multiple levels, drawing on, for example, comparative politics and institutional perspectives.

This framework will be used to identify key governance requirements and reform options helping Germany achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.


We encourage joint research and co-authoring with our outstanding researchers across all seniority levels at the Centre, the School, and beyond.


Your profile:

  • Master's degree in political science, political economy, or a related field
  • Knowledge of German and European climate policy and governance, comparative politics, and institutional analysis is an asset
  • Qualitative research skills (including interviews, literature review and synthesis, theoretical analysis)
  • Interest in pursuing a PhD in topics closely related to the job profile
  • Excellent analytical, writing, and project management skills
  • A track record of relevant previous work or publications is an asset
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Excellent German language skills
