Job description
We are currently offering internships for summer 2023 to
work with the Science and Policy Teams based in our Berlin office. We are looking for
talented and organised team players with a keen interest in working in the climate
change field. You will gain experience by working in project teams addressing a variety of
climate issues, while honing your existing skills.

Internship topics

  • Note: We will continue to add additional topics to this list over the coming months. Please check back again for further opportunities._

1.
Python programming tasks (all require an intern with Python programming skills)**:

Tropical cyclone hindcasts for the Pacific or Indian Ocean:Based on an existing study done in the Atlantic Ocean, support reproduction of tropical cyclone hindcasts for the Pacific or Indian Ocean.

Climate change metrics for the agricultural sector:Understanding the implications of different emission scenarios for the agricultural sector, i.e. the impact on crop yields and food security.

Extending TIMBER v0.1 to account for irrigation and represent relative humidity:Train the TIMBER v0.1 framework to represent local temperature responses to irrigation, as well as extend the existing Generalised Additive Model used in TIMBER to a Vectorised approach so as to represent both temperature and relative humidity responses to af/de/reforestation.

2. Renewable energy systems research**
Techno-economic Renewable Energy Source (RES) potentials:Literature research of techno-economic RES potentials published by established organisations. This task requires an understanding of how RES work.

3. Land use and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) options**Literature research and policy analysis for carbon-dioxide removal options in OECD countries and land use models. Can include data collection (historical land use emissions, forest data). This task requires an understanding of CDR options and modelling work. Python programming skills are not required but a plus.

4. Multivariate emulators**
Evaluating model performance: Developing a standardized procedure to evaluate and compare the performance of emulators (= very simple models that mimick climate models). Mainly time-series analysis (in real and fourier space). Python programming skills are required

Rossby waves (or other teleconnections) in MESMER simulations: Support Science Team colleagues with developing new ways that MESMER, an Earth system model emulator, could be altered to reproduce teleconnections. Python programming skills are required
